Weekly Post: The Piedras Blancas Ranch and San Simeon by Robert Glenn Ketchum

The Piedras Blancas Ranch and San Simeon

by Robert Glenn Ketchum

In 2002, the American Land Conservancy (ALC) decided to attempt a negotiation with the Hearst family to place the 89,000-acre Piedras Blancas ranch surrounding teh Hearst castle at San Simeon into protected conservation easement rather than developing the property as commercial real estate. I sat on the ALC board, and to close the deal the ranch had to be documented, so I was commissioned to do the work, and I became the only photographer ever allowed on the property.

The Piedras Blancas Ranch and San Simeon, #1
San Simeon #1:
Most people have heard of the Hearst Castle, San Simeon, and they know it sits above Highway #1 on the California coast. What many don’t realize is that the castle is but a small part of the total Hearst property that surrounds it. Hearst actually owns 89,000-acres, known as the Piedras Blancas ranch. The ranch is a working cattle ranch, but other exotic species have been introduced like buffalo, giraffes, and zebras. The ranch also supports some of the largest wildflower fields in the United States, such as the vast Goldfields bloom depicted here.
