1968 Self Portraits of Robert Glenn Ketchum

Self-portrait in 4-F Camouflage, 1968
photograph(s) © copyright, ROBERT GLENN KETCHUM, 2014, @RbtGlennKetchum @LittleBearProd #LittleBearProd
These images were created as part of a class assignment while studying with Robert Heinecken (#RobertHeinecken) at #UCLA in 1968. These are black and white (b/w) photographs that have been highly manipulated in the darkroom, and then painted upon with oils of different transparency value. Heinecken was a very non-traditional photographer who encouraged experimental work.  He furthered my approach and thinking about the process of making pictures begun in my first #photography classes at UCLA, taught by Edmund Teske (#EdmundTeske), also a very non-traditional photographer. I know my work was also influenced by contemporary graphics as well as many of the rock star personalities I was photographing at the time.

Weekly Post: SAN IGNACIO LAGOON: Saved For the Whales! by Robert GlennKetchum

by Robert Glenn Ketchum

World-Renowned Conservation Photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum dedicates Tuesday's to the Natural Resources Defense Council's (@NRDC) successful campaign that kept a whale birthing lagoon from industrial development.  Laguna San Ignacio Gray Whale Nursery in Baja California, Mexico is best known as the winter home to the once-endangered gray whale. The lagoon lies within one of the largest ecological preserves in Latin America, designated a Biosphere Reserve / World Heritage Site by the Mexican government in 1988. This blog is part of that story.  Enjoy!

San Ignacio Lagoon: SAVED For the Whales! #90:
SAN IGNACIO WHALES #90: The bottom line is that A LOT OF PEOPLE showed their human concern for the protection of some amazing fellow travelers on this #planet and now the gray #whales of #SanIgnacioLagoon can continue their long history of using this safe haven as their birthing area and nursery! Thank you #JoelReynolds and #NRDC for inviting me to take part in this. Thank you to Bobbie Kennedy and his family, the Aridjis, Glenn Close and her daughter, and Pierce Brosnan and his son for allowing themselves to be figureheads to this #campaign and for allowing all of us the thousands of pictures, interviews, and words that it took. This was a privilege for me, as well as an education.  AND a chance to physically interact with one of the largest minds and creatures on this planet. This is the last post of this story, so I hope you have enjoyed what I have tried to relate and that you will take the opportunity to visit San Ignacio, touch a whale, drink some tequila and cerveza and watch the sun rise and set in shimmering radiance of the tidal fluctuations.

Cont, NO PEBBLE MINE, 1-100: Pictures from Ground Zero by Robert Glenn Ketchum

Continued... No Pebble Mine #1-100
Wednesday, August 13, 2014

NO PEBBLE MINE #100, Pictures from Ground Zero:
NO PEBBLE MINE #100, Pictures from Ground Zero:  The #rain stopped. The #sky cleared a bit. The #wind died down, so the #lake calmed, and my plane came in... SO let's go flying! We are headed back to #LakeIliamna to continue around the south shore, eventually crossing over the #Kvichak river, and although we will be going back over some of the same #landscape seen coming in, I have NEVER flown over the same landscape on different days or at different times and EVER thought it looked the same. In this view, #Katmai is being left behind and #BrooksCamp and the #IliukArm are now out-of-sight to the upper right. The massively braided #Savanoski river winds across the middle of the frame and our flight path is beginning to cross over some of the myriad of lesser lakes. Down there somewhere are 2,000+ happy bear. Hail Katmai! Hail Wilderness! Happy 50th Anniversary #WildernessAct (@Wilderness)!

No Pebble Mine! Pebble asks EPA to 'stop the madness' of potential veto by Manuel Quiñones

Below is the second of two recent articles that reflect the continuing resolve of the Pebble Limited Partnership – that is, Northern Dynasty Minerals. Their new CEO – a DC lawyer named Tom Collier – has been doing the rounds in DC, arguing in the strongest terms that the Pebble Mine is a good project, that the environmental community is conspiring illegally with EPA, that EPA is an out-of-control agency for responding to the request of Bristol Bay residents for help, and that new funding for the project is imminent.

Obviously, we have a different view – see below. I was in DC recently myself with a long list of Pebble Mine meetings on the Hill and with EPA. These articles demonstrate how important it is not to let up – and we won’t.

The weekend of May 17-18 is a BIG fundraising effort for both Crossroads School (where my children go) and for the Venice Family Clinic and their legendary annual ARTWALK. Yesterday I posted the auction image and information about Crossroads, but that is an event for the school only, not the general public.

On Sunday the 18th, however, the ARTWALK event is VERY public so come enjoy the MANY things that are going on.

No Pebble Mine! London Financial Times

This "ad" ran Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in the London Financial Times. The background picture is mine and one of many NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) has used in this campaign. This has been a remarkable campaign with many "partners", NRDC BioGems Defenders, The Orvis Company, Tiffany & Co. - thank you all, glad my images were of value. Keep Alaskan salmon doing the wild thing!

Order From Chaos by Robert Glenn Ketchum

While studying photography with two very untraditional photographers, Edmund Teske and Robert Heinecken at UCLA (1966-1970), I was also shooting rock-and-roll bands on the Sunset Strip and spending long hours in the traditional "wet" darkroom experimenting with many forms of non-traditional printmaking. At the time, I was working mostly in black-and-white. When I added color it was usually by painting or dyeing it in.

CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE INTO ABSTRACTION: WORKS FROM THE ORANGE COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

I would like to thank the OCMA / Orange County Museum of Art  and Chief Curator, Dan Cameron, for including my work in the large exhibit they currently have on display, LANDSCAPE INTO ABSTRACTION. Filling ALL of the galleries of the museum, this show features some of the most important artists on the West Coast - painters and photographers alike - and ties them together thru their common interest in subject. This is GREAT show, please go see it if you have the opportunity.

Photo Series, "WINTERS: 1970-1980" by Robert Glenn Ketchum

Because of inclusion in PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, the collective exhibits defining Los Angeles art and artists since 1945, and now as part of a G2 Gallery exhibit with Ansel Adams (Venice, CA), one of my earliest portfolios of work, WINTERS: 1970-1980 is receiving a lot of renewed attention.
That portfolio had 24 images and although widely shown in the decade following publication, those images which helped establish my reputation were overshadowed by my national conservation campaigns and publications. Recently, that portfolio is finally up with accompanying text on my websitewww.robertglennketchum.com, but I have also decided to use Constant Contact in a novel, non-commercial way - to show off my older portfolios and relate the issues and stories behind their creation. Now that I am 64 I see these releases as an autobiographical chronology of my career. I hope you will enjoy them starting with WINTERS: 1970-1980.

Thanks to the Getty and over 60 participating regional museums and galleries, in 2011 - 2012 an astounding series of exhibitions were installed throughout the Los Angeles area under the encompassing banner: PACIFIC STANDARD TIME The concept of these collective exhibits was to articulate the importance of those artists who have practiced in Los Angeles since 1945. Their unique perspectives have come to define the diverse artistic culture of LA and bring about the birth of the LA art scene.
